The British tennis star achieved the most important success of his career by rebounding from a set down to beat world No 1 Carlos Alcaraz in three hard-fought sets in the second round of the Paris Masters.

While he had previously defeated Alcaraz on two occasions, this triumph represents Norrie's first ever success over a current world No 1.

"Massive. Extremely important for me," said Norrie, who is now the fifth UK male player in the record books to overcome a global number one. "Coming back from a physical setback last year, I was defeated in the first round of qualifiers here. I just sought to enjoy my game in the latter part of the year. To secure a victory like this, it's the biggest victory of my career, my first win over the top player and likely the strongest player in the world right now."

Norrie, ranked No 31, also ended Alcaraz's impressive streak of nine consecutive finals and 17 successive elite tournament successes, which marked the best series of outcomes in the Spaniard's young professional path.

Alcaraz appeared to be moving confidently to success early on as he eased through the opening set. Nevertheless, the British contender gradually fought his way back into the game by executing with greater precision and dragging the Spanish opponent into extended, grueling exchanges.
