Russell Wilson Responds at Ex-Mentor Sean Payton Regarding Jaxson Dart Remarks
NY Giants signal-caller Russell Wilson didn't mince words on online platforms this week, responding to recent comments from his ex-mentor Sean Payton.
"Tasteless... but not surprised...," Wilson stated on X. "Had no idea you're still bounty hunting 15+ years later through the press."
Wilson's response directly referenced the infamous bounty scandal issue from 2009 to 2011, when Payton led the New Orleans Saints.
During that period, the NFL found that the Saints had incentivized team members for making hard hits on rival teams. Consequently, Payton received a suspension from the league for one season.
The Cause of the Latest Dispute
Wilson's response came after Payton made remarks after Denver's historic 33-32 win over the New York. Payton suggested that the team had "discovered new energy" with Jaxson Dart, who has replaced Wilson as the starting quarterback.
Additionally, Payton hinted that he had informed Giants owner John Mara that he would prefer playing against Wilson instead of Dart.
"I spoke to John Mara recently and I said, 'We hoped that change would've happened long after our game,'" the coach commented.
Background of the Coach-QB Partnership
- The quarterback was traded to the Broncos from the Seahawks in 2022 and inked a five-year, $245 million contract.
- The team finished 4-11 in his debut year before Denver hired Payton, who was returning to the sidelines after a period in broadcasting.
- The coach replaced Wilson late into the 2023 campaign, a decision that ensured the player from suffering an injury.
If Wilson stayed on the team by March 2024, his $37M salary for the following year would have been guaranteed. Ultimately, Wilson was released, marking the contentious breakup between the player and his coach.
