The Last of Us Director's Fresh Project That Seems Unfamiliar But Expands Upon The Same Ideas.

Bruce Straley behind the iconic survival game has unveiled a comeback into game development. His new project, titled Coven of the Chicken Foot, marks the first release for his development house, Wildflower Interactive, a project that expands the ideas of the legacy he helped create centered around reactive companion characters.

A Witch, A Creature, and A New Kind of Adventure

Shown for the first time at a recent industry showcase, Coven of the Chicken Foot functions as an adventure game blending puzzles and platforming. The game follows Gertie, a protagonist who subverts traditional video game heroics. This central concept came from a desire to deconstruct standard narrative tropes.

"Imagine if you lacked the sword or shield? What if you were physically limited? What if you're an elderly woman?" posed the creative lead. "This felt really fascinating to explore the definition of a protagonist. Being a hero means persevering against problems, but it’s also about sacrifice, loyalty, determination, and persistence."

A Living, Learning Partner Inspired by Past Work

Even though the title looks different at first glance, its core innovation builds directly upon the technology developed for The Last of Us. The game's conception sprang from one pivotal question: "How could one create a companion character even more reactive and adaptive in response to the user?"

The mysterious beast within this adventure transcends typical AI behavior. Straley describes it as a toddler which observes and responds through a multi-phase process. To begin with, it investigates its surroundings, potentially leading to playful hijinks. Then, it enters a playful state. Ultimately, it watches and learns comprehending the world's rules.

  • To illustrate: Should the beast observe Gertie slot a puzzle piece, it understands the action without knowing the purpose.
  • Subsequently, it may begin grabbing various things and test fitting them, copying the action.
  • The 'why' is learned when it stumbles upon solving a puzzle itself, creating a genuine learning moment.

Crafting Your Own Unique Story

This complex system seeks to generate a unique story for each player. The creative lead highlights that Coven of the Chicken Foot is intended as a slower-paced, exploration-driven experience as opposed to a linear, combat-centric story.

"Anytime I tried rigid narrative turns into this game, the excitement fell apart," Straley explained. "The liveliness between these characters is that you as a player experiences unique moments and stories compared to my playthrough."

This commitment to player-defined experiences, this upcoming game marks both an evolution and a drastic departure from the director’s well-known franchises. This adventure remains targeting computer systems.
